WHOA! That is a Spyker C8 Laviolette LM85

img_7984.jpgEvery once in a while you come across something rare,  in the world of motorfanatics, rare doesn’t automatically mean good, but it does always spur interest.  Today is one of those days where rare, means really good….in a Spyker kinda’ way.  Until today, I had never seen a Spyker on the road (pics here), the only time I’ve ever come in contact with them, has been at autoshows.Luckily last year, at the LA autoshow when the attendant left the door up, I mistook another fan as a booth babe, and asked her if it was ok if I climbed in…she looked at me like I was speaking jibberish, and again I made the mistake of thinking…wow, they must have brought her over from the Netherlands!  Long story short, I climbed in, looked around, and did my standard look over….on exit, the door to the car was immediately shut, and the rope was up.   I guess I wasn’t really supposed to be sitting in that car.  Lucky for me I got in when I did…because its a slim chance that I’ll ever get that shot again.

Cut to this morning at Cars & Coffee in Irvine…along comes the super rare 2009 Spyker C8 Laviolette LM85.  One of only 24 versions of the same car, minus the LM85 part.  Right of the bat you notice the cosmetic differences, but beyond looks, there are abundant uses of lighter materials including an all aluminum body, that bring the 400hp vehicle down to a 2800 pound curb weight.  THAT SOUNDS FUN!  From what I’ve heard, they are a blast to drive.  So since I’ve never driven one, the thing I really love about these cars, is their design and craftsmanship.  They’ve got a nautical kind of thing going, that mixes with a Tim Burton kind of look…it may seem a little strange at first, but if you look for a while, you are quickly mesmerized by the quirky style.  Love ‘em or hate ‘em, the Spyker idea is unique, and I think its great.   Use a proven motor, in this case from Audi, and spend your time making the rest of the car wild and fun.  Perfect for a small company that doesn’t have the resources to develop power plants.  Spyker is kind of like us here at motorfanatics…a highly trained, elite fighting outfit, built for performance, strikingly attractive, most definitely sought after, and only attainable to an incredibly privileged few…..;)
